Choose a Resolution for the Viewing Distance

A higher pixel density can preserve fine detail at close viewing distance, while a large poster viewed from farther away may not need the same density. Ask the print provider for its file specifications before exporting final artwork.

  • 300 DPI is a common close-viewed print target, not a universal guarantee.
  • Cropping changes both the aspect ratio and the pixels available for printing.
  • Changing only the DPI metadata does not add captured detail.

FAQ

What is the print-size formula?

Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by DPI. For centimeters, multiply the inch result by 2.54.

Is 300 DPI always required?

No. It is a common target for close-viewed prints, but larger prints viewed from farther away may look acceptable at a lower density.

Does changing DPI add image detail?

No. Changing a DPI metadata value alone does not create new source detail. Resampling can add pixels, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured.

Can the tool read my image dimensions?
